Condom Fashion Show : Condoms Find a Whole New Use

If you didn’t know already, National Condom Week is right around the corner.  You likely won’t get any time off from work to celebrate this national event, but there is no better time for you to embrace your love of condoms and to spread the word about safe sex.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to find out that National Condom Week will be taking place from February 11 through the 15th.  After all, the National Day of Love – Valentine’s Day – falls within this week.  Since millions of couples will be feeling very romantic on this special day, the need for condoms is sure to spike.

The University of Southern Mississippi is taking its condom affection to a whole new level.  During National Condom Week, the Student Health Services department is going to host a Condom Fashion Show.  Get your mind out of the gutter – it isn’t what you think!

At the Condom Fashion Show, entrants will actually be creating and displaying clothing that is made entirely out of condoms.  It’s a pretty interesting concept, don’t you think?

“We celebrate National Condom Week every year, and we wanted to do something a little different this year to get student’s attention,” said the Student Health Services health promotions coordinator, Jodi Tate.

I think this fashion show is sure to capture attention and create a little buzz.  Not only that, I applaud the university for embracing safe sex practices rather than trying to push abstinence upon its students.  Sex is a natural act and students should be taught how to engage in it safely. 

It seems that Tata agrees, saying “It’s such a taboo topic, but it needs to be talked about.”

The fashion entrants will have plenty of opportunities to win a prize at the special fashion show.  Categories will include Most Colorful, Most Creative, as well as Most Protected, with the Most Protected aware going to the entry that uses the most condoms.  There will also be a first runner-up prize as well as a Best Overall prize.  The winners will receive candy as well as condom balloons.

In order to help those that are interested in participating in the fashion show, the Student Health Services department will be giving out free expired condoms.  Just a friendly CondomMan reminder to students at the University of Southern Mississippi:  those expired condoms shouldn’t be used for sexual activity.  But, hey, when it comes to having a little fun with fashion, why should those expired condoms go to waste.

The fashionable condom clothing isn’t all that will be offered at the show.  According to health promotions coordinator, Ashley Wreay, there will be special presentations held before the show as well.  “We’ll try to have a little bit of education and a lot of fun,” she said.  “We’re trying to promote healthier lifestyle choices in terms of sexual health.”

The show is going to take place on February 12 at 5:30 at the Union Lobby.  If anyone lives in the area and can attend the show, we would love to see some pictures and to hear firsthand accounts about the show.
