16 year-old Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant

Being from Los Angeles, I get more than my fair share of daily Hollywood gossip and I’ve become pretty numb to it by now. But even I was shocked when I read today that Britney Spears’s younger sister, 16 year old Jamie Lynn Spears, is confirming that she is pregnant.

The story was first broke by OK! Magazine :

A source tells us the interview, which hits stands tomorrow, is six pages and is on the record with Jamie Lynn and her mother. She tells the mag that the father is Casey Aldridge, who she has been dating for some time and first met at church. Brit’s younger sister, star of Nick’s “Zoey 101,” says she’s keeping the baby.

Shortly thereafter, I have also read confirmation from TMZ, and People magazine.

What this says about our culture, from my perspective, is that some young people are still completely clueless about the dangers of not practicing safe sex. We live in a society where teenagers try to grow up as quickly as possible. But growing up is more than just buying designer jeans and going out to clubs; it’s about maturity and taking responsibility for your actions. Jamie Lynn’s life is now irrevocably taken off-course from where she wanted to go, and just a simple bit of foresight and clear thinking could have prevented that from happening.

Clearly, she is not ready to raise a child at 16 years old. But she will have to be. From what I have read about her, she was a rising star on Nickelodeon and most certainly had the contacts, the network, and the ability to make it in the entertainment business – something which very few people have. All of that fame and success will now have to sit on the back burner as she deals with the consequences of her actions.

I won’t say that this is entirely the fault of the young couple, however. Her older sister also became pregnant accidentally with her second child, so I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to suggest that these parents never had the safe sex talk with their children. Looking back, I wonder how much different their lives would be if they had just taken 10 minutes out of their lives, sat down with their children, and asked them if they had any questions about sex.

I hope that during the hype and buzz over this story, the most important message is not lost : that young people need to learn the value of safe sex and responsible behavior. When you are just starting out in the world, your entire life is in front of you. Make sure that you do everything you need to to make sure that your plan for the future is not harshly brought off course.
